WORSHIP LITURGY
litˇurˇgy/ noun
1. A form or formulary according to which public religious worship, especially Christian worship, is conducted.
Grace Lutheran utilizes several liturgies throughout the church year. Many of us grew up with using one or two liturgies every Sunday without any change for years. The updates of several Lutheran worship hymnals included other liturgies as well. The words are often the same or perhaps rearranged, the tunes are often different, but the basics are always the same: Kyrie, Hymn of Praise, Gospel Verse, Offertory, The Great Thanksgiving, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and the Post- Communion Thanksgiving.
For the Easter season, starting 1 May, we will be using the "Bread of Life" Holy Communion liturgy from With One Voice. The music will be "new" yet very easy to sing and the words will be quite familiar. All will be printed in the worship folders for everyone.
Sing to the Lord a new song!
| MARTY HAUGEN, Hymn and Liturgical Composer For the summer and the fall, the liturgies we will be using are Marty Haugen's Now the Feast and Celebration (he collaborated with campus pastors at Pacific Lutheran University while composing/writing it) and Mass of Creation. He was born in rural Minnesota and raised in the American Lutheran Church (ALC). After graduating from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa with a degree in psychology he pursued a career as a musician, initially composing songs for use in worship in the Catholic Church. He continues to write contemporary hymns and liturgies for both the Lutheran church and the Catholic Church even though he is a member of the United Church of Christ. Haugen also is a liturgical composer, workshop presenter, performing/recording artist, and as composer-in-residence at the Mayflower United Church of Christ in Minneapolis. Here at Grace we often sing his hymns, including Here in this Place (Gather Us In), Canticle of the Sun, Awake, Awake and Greet the New Morn and Shepherd Me, O God, and many others found in the Hymnal Supplement located in the pews. In addition, Haugen has contributed to hymnals or supplements for many denominational groups including ELCA, the United Methodist Church, the Mennonite Brethren, the United Church of Christ, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the United Church of Canada, the Church of England, the Church of Scotland and Roman Catholic groups in Great Britain, Canada, Ireland and Australia.
