Text: Micah 6:1-8

Prayer Pointers:

To be willing to give time over to God

To be patient in walking with the Lord

MICAH IS THE PROPHET of walking; his prophetic utterances point repeatedly to the paths in which people walk. This famous passage ends with the stirring call to “walk humbly” with the Lord.

What does it mean to walk in the Lord’s way?

First, it means that we will be going slow. We measure things by their efficiency, thinking that covering great distances in the shortest time possible is what’s important. We rush through life, literally unable to see what is next to us or around us because it is gone before we can take notice of it. Walking corrects for that, allowing us to really notice what is going on, what is around us. Delicate flowers; animal trails; even a piece of litter tells us that someone has been here, that something is going on around us and we should be primed for possible discoveries.

The things that God calls us to seek—justice, kindness and humility—are not things that come quickly or easily. They take time; they require investment in the lives of others; they require curiosity about what God is up to and how we might align ourselves with God’s work.

The Christian life begins in an invitation to walk alongside a rabbi who teaches us how to walk in the way Micah proclaims. The core of this long, slow walk—this discipleship—with the Lord is very simple: it ss about prayer and Scripture—a conversation between God and you. It is about life together—an expectation that Christ is found in our midst and we will be changed by encountering him. It is about giving—arms wide open giving that is open to profound sorrow and incredible joy. It is about all of these things, and not skimming over them, not rushing by them, not ignoring them, but engaging them in trust, that in these things our Lord is at work in you, bringing to light discovery upon incredible discovery.
