That the Living Word would take hold of you
In praise of God’s lovingkindness
Today’s text: Hebrews 4:11-16
IT IS EASY TO forget that the Word of God is alive.
We tend to view the Word of God—especially when we are reading the Word—as something inanimate, something inert. We draw meaning out of the words we read, we discover wisdom or useful knowledge, we are in control.
But the Word of God is alive, active, sharp as any two-edged sword; the Word accomplishes things. The Word has personality! The Word can move, come and go as needed, as wished. The Word creates salvation and life; health, peace, joy; freedom, purpose and reconciliation. The Word does all these things and more. It is in control.
This Lent, let us examine our pride, that imagines that we can tell the Lord who speaks such a mighty Word what he can or cannot do, and simply be grateful that his Word comes to us at all.
