Prayer Pointers:

That the Holy Spirit would set your mind on Christ

For wisdom to practice the things of your new self

Today’s text: Colossians 3:1-11

THE CORE ISSUE OF OUR AGE is not love; it is hope. We distract ourselves with excess talk of love because we will not admit that our hopes are dried up. We hope entirely for the things of this earth because we no longer have the hope that Paul did: that our lives are hidden with Christ in God. We live entirely as creatures of earth and so our ethics, our politics, our economics—even our theology, our “god-talk”—are entirely of earth. We are idolaters, no different than those long-ago pagans who worshipped sacred sex and growth cycles and political power and gods of gold, of silver, of wood—all made with human hands.

And we are frantic because our hopes fail us.

So hear the words of Paul again: set your minds on things that are from above, and not of earth! We have died, and something new has been given to us: a new nature, a new self, which is God’s gift to us. We are no longer those who measure by earthly measures, but we look on each other as new creatures because that is what we are.

May your day be grace-filled ~ Pr. Dave Brooks
