As a part of our Advent observances at Grace, we are making use of Concordia Publishing’s Behold the Child materials for worship. Our web devotions through Christmas will be guided by Pastor Kevin Golden’s devotional booklet written in support of the Behold the Child theme (you may purchase a downloadable copy of Pr. Golden’s book by following this link).
To seek the good of others
For the joy of Christ’s zeal for you
Christ, who dwells in you, seeks only what is good. –Pr. Golden
ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE will consume me!
John quotes the Psalmist (Psalm 69) as he recalls the memory of Jesus cleansing the Temple. But why does Jesus do it?
Because of his love for God and for his neighbor.
When the Temple officials confront Jesus, he admonishes them for turning the center of Israel’s life into a market, a place where the sheep of God’s pasture are being fleeced! What the Temple has become neither honors God nor enables worshippers to know God.
In our own lives, we turn from God and neighbor because of our sin. We disdain others in our pride, we fear others in our weakness, we hate others in our anger. Yet Christ, who is zealous with love for us, turns us from sin, gives us new hearts for him alone. He comes and cleanses the temple of our hearts, that we may honor and know God and turn to our neighbors in love.
