For wisdom in the Spirit
To make true confession with your life
Today’s text: 1 John 3:19-4:6
TEST THE SPIRITS, for not all come from God. In our age, when there are so many voices, so many commandments being given, so many “truths” circling around that it can seem hard to do what John urges. But we are not to believe every spirit, so
1) Be careful of those spirits that declare that it is not important that Jesus is the Son of God in the flesh or declare that his Resurrection is not particularly relevant.
2) Be careful of those spirits that tell you to hate your neighbor, that your neighbor is a threat to be neutralized, or that you are meant to destroy. The fruits of the Holy Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
3) Be careful of those spirits that would set up a kingdom on earth, for tyranny is sure to follow. The Holy Spirit is the life of the Kingdom of God, and that Kingdom is good news for the poor, release to captives, new sight for those who cannot see, freedom for the oppressed, and God’s favor for all (Luke 4:18-19).
Most of all, remember that you yourself—your words, your way of living, your sharing community with God’s People around his Word and Sacraments—are a testing of the spirits. Our words and deeds reveal either the spirit of error or the spirit of truth at work in us. Remember! You and I have been given the spirit of adoption, the spirit that makes us children of God, so be quick to call upon the Father in all things, for the Holy Spirit itself testifies that we belong to God.
