Text: Mark 7:1-23

“They noticed that some of His disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them." Mark 7:2

What is this? Eating without washing hands? Doesn’t Jesus know that’s a good way to spread disease? And in these pandemic days, we are all instructed (again and again!) to Wear, Wash, and Wait. What’s going on here?

Let’s take a step back and look at the larger picture. Jesus’ main concern, every single minute, was to invite people to become His followers. He wanted to give them His love, forgiveness, and eternal life. But the Pharisees were so concerned with minutia that they couldn’t see the bigger picture. It’s like they were so occupied with making sure the knives and forks were placed on the table properly that they couldn’t see the delicious steak dinner He was offering. Jesus wanted to expand their perception, to show them a better way.

With all that’s going on today, any of us can be trapped in the trivial and lose sight of the eternal. So along with our attempts to Wear, Wash, and Wait to get rid of the coronavirus, let’s also do this: Wear the love of Christ because we are Washed clean through Baptism and Holy Communion. Then we will be empowered to Work to establish His kingdom and Wait for His coming again.

Lord Jesus, grant unto us today and always a clear vision of Your call and the strength to fulfill the ministry assigned to us. We pray in the name of Christ. Amen.
