Text: Matthew 14:1-12
For the wisdom of the Holy Spirit
To be grounded in God's Word
To walk through life well and not fall prey to foolishness
For those whose companions lead them astray
HEROD FELL INTO FOLLY because he was the example of Paul’s “unspiritual man” (1 Cor 2:14). Already living in sin, he did not perceive the working of God in his own life and so succumbed to his own pride and the peer pressure he experienced. John the Baptist lost his head because Herod lost his long ago.
We should be on guard against thinking that God is far away, or that the daily events of life are not means by which God might address us, shape us, or use us for blessing others. Don’t lose your head, but let God instruct you to live well!
O Holy Spirit, enter in
and in our hearts your work begin.
Please make our hearts your dwelling.
Sun of the soul, O Light divine,
around and in us brightly shine,
Your strength in us upwelling.
In your radiance Life from heaven
now is given, overflowing,
gift of gifts beyond all knowing.
Left to ourselves, we surely stray;
oh, lead us on the narrow way,
with wisest counsel guide us.
And give us steadfastness, that we
may follow you forever free,
no matter who derides us!
Gently heal those hearts now broken;
give some token you are near us,
Whom we trust to light and cheer us.
May your day be grace-filled ~ Pr. Dave Brooks
