Text: Acts 1:15-26
Prayer Pointers:
For trust in the Spirit who searches all things
To be able to say yes when called
For the leaders in our parish

DO YOU REMEMBER MATTHIAS? Perhaps not. Little is known about him; the Church’s remembrance of him is that he went north from Jerusalem into the Cappadocian region in what is now central Turkey and shared the faith with Greek speaking residents there. Then he went to the shores of the Caspian Sea, near Russia, where he was martyred. There is no mention of him in the New Testament other than this story.
But does it matter, that the story of Matthias is only (by our lights) a small entry in the “giant encyclopedia” of the Church? Absolutely not! Matthias had been a part of the mission of Jesus, and when the Spirit of God called to him, he was ready. The life of the Church is sustained by the lives and the works of millions like Matthias, people who are maybe a name in a book, maybe a faded photograph, maybe a memory in a small parish or a family, but their lives have been caught up in God’s great work to bring all creation back into relationship with him.
Remember, nothing done in the name of Jesus and with his call is ever wasted. It will bear fruit!
