To rest in your baptism
For the Holy Spirit to teach you the truth about Christ and yourself
Today’s text: 1 John 2:18-29
IN THE “LAST HOUR” that John warns his readers against, he urges his brothers and sisters to not be deceived but remember that the “anointing which you received from him abides in you…his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and it is no lie; just as it taught you, abide in him.”
This anointing is the Holy Spirit, that roving Breath of God that blows life into dead flesh, brings wisdom to blockheaded brains, and ensures connection with the very loving heart of God. But it is important to remember that this anointing is no fleeting feeling, no self-generated “I sensed the Spirit’s presence one day,” but a concrete event, a thing that happened that the believer can point back to and say “God did this, and it is the core of my life.” In baptism, where God breathes the Spirit of Life into the man or woman who is washed, truth is proclaimed: you now belong to God; God has promised to save you; his promise is true and no lie; so whenever antichrist comes whispering “you are far from God,” let the reality of the Sacrament teach you all that you need to know at that moment—I am baptized!
