Today’s text: John 15:1-11

THE ORTHODOX THEOLOGIAN Alexander Schmemann, in writing about the Baptismal liturgy, noted that

to renounce Satan…is not to reject a mythological being in whose existence one does not believe. Rather, it is to reject an entire worldview made of pride and self-affirmation, of that pride which has truly taken human life from God and made it into darkness, death and hell.

In baptism, we have been grafted into Christ, and all that is his is now ours. The branch does not, cannot exist for itself, but exists to bear fruit that declares, reveals, announces the merit of the vine. There is no merit in us, no righteousness we can claim for our own, no pride we can take for ourselves; we do as God has made possible, we grow as we have been given, for life has been bestowed on us.

May your day be grace-filled ~ Pr. Dave Brooks
