As a part of our Advent observances at Grace, we are making use of Concordia Publishing’s Behold the Child materials for worship. Our web devotions through Christmas will be guided by Pastor Kevin Golden’s devotional booklet written in support of the Behold the Child theme (you may purchase a downloadable copy of Pr. Golden’s book by following this link).
Prayer Pointers:
To ask for God’s Word to reveal your idolatries
For those who hold public office, that they would be upheld in every good deed
Text: Psalm 146:3
[Salvation] will only be found in the King, our Lord Jesus Christ. –Pr. Golden
THIS IS A BENEFICIAL WORD, coming as it does during a contentious time in our public life. We are all tempted to put enormous hopes in our political processes, to forget that we are meant for eternity and therefor invest outsized meaning in the ebb and flow of our political “champions.”
The hard, important fact is that there is nowhere else to find salvation other than in our Lord. All princes (and princesses, as the case may be) will fail us. They must. Flesh and blood as we are, they do not have the power to answer our deepest needs and longings. We would all do well (citizens and candidates) to not claim for ourselves or lay upon others such all-encompassing demands.
Let us remember that Advent is the time for our watching and our waiting for the one who comes to bear all things, who alone can govern rightly, who is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
May you live in Advent hope ~ Pr. Dave Brooks
